What mold detox should entail
and what tends to be over emphasized!
Detoxification

Many products get pushed on the market to support mold detox, binders being a big part of it. When we look to supporting mold detox, binders are really a small part of the whole picture.
Mold illness is not just exposure to mold, taking binders to clear, and you’re all better.
Mold illness creates an inflammatory response within the body: depleting nutrients necessary to detoxify and support us at the cellular level, creating sludgy bile flow where many toxins should be carried out but instead get trapped, dysregulate the immune system, create fungal overgrowth within the body, cause nervous system and limbic system dysregulation and cause histamine issues/MCAS.
So how do we address mold illness? By looking at all of these factors.
Support where needed, first.
We need to look at areas of the body that have failed to continue their support due to this big inflammatory response.
Sensitivities to things arise when mold has taken hold in the body. This is where supporting mast cell regulation, lowering histamine load and supporting the vagal and limbic systems are key.
If layering those approaches are still too much for that person, looking to lymph flow and fascial work are key to reducing sensitivities. Our fascia holds trauma, stress, emotions…. gentle releases through fascial work can be wonderful. As well as lymph flow, a lot gets congested at the clavicle, neck and behind the ears, which happen to be the area the vagus nerve runs through.
Everything is CONNECTED. And if doing the nervous system work is too stimulating, then focusing on fascia and lymph work should be next.

Vagus nerve, immune system and lymph: Studies show that nerve activation and neurotransmitter release within a local lymph node can trigger the temporary retention of immune cells, including lymphocytes and neutrophils, in that specific location.
Vagus nerve, diaphragm and lymph: The vagus nerve passes through the diaphragm, the body's primary respiratory muscle. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing stimulates both the vagus nerve and the diaphragmatic lymphatic pump, which helps to circulate lymph and remove toxins.
Vagus nerve, lymph and central nervous system: In 2015, researchers discovered a dural lymphatic system that drains the brain's interstitial fluid. This system has been shown to contain lymphatic vessels exiting the skull along certain cranial nerves, including the vagus nerve.
Over coming sensitivities
This is when we can move into deeper detox supports prior to mold. Important things to consider: bioflavonoids, gallbladder/liver, gut motility and healthy fat supports, any nutrient/mineral repletion.
![]() Bioflavonoids These are compounds found in fruits and vegetables. They help to dislodge mycotoxins from the bloodstream to get excreted out of the body, and they make detoxification go super smooth. My favorite Bioflavonoid supplement: Color Guard use code STEPHANIEP | ![]() Healthy fats Our brain and cells become very impacted from mold. Healthy fats, DHA, and phosphatidylcholine/serine help repair these areas to make us stronger and support detox from these areas. Mycotoxins are also fat soluble, so this actually helps to detox them out by consuming good fatty foods like olive oil. I tell clients, 1 tablespoon of olive oil at lunch and dinner. My favorite third party tested olive oil: Oliveda |
Mold colonization
Address colonization sooner rather than later!
Don’t wait to get on anti fungals, this is key to clearing that mycotoxin load. Sinus sprays and gut anti fungals are key, then when the time is right, implementing biofilm disrupters to clear out any last remaining treatment resistant strains.

Immune Health
Support immune system modulation
Mold causes a dysregulated immune system response, which can lead to a cycle of downstream inflammatory responses occurring in the body, even after we have left the mold environment.
At some point giving the body immune system supports: not ones that actually hype up the immune system, but modulate it to get back to homeostasis and clear those biotoxins out.
In my below interview with Deidre Bloomquist, we discuss immune system modulation so you can learn more there.
